This D-II program is churning out transfer portal stars — and never missing a beat

Trinidad Chambliss made Ferris State a household name. And the Bulldogs have kept on winning without their star QB, using the quirks of the NIL era to their advantage.

Happy Thursday,

We’re going for a ride into the world of elite Division II football today, which … isn’t much different than Division I FBS. Whether you’re Ferris State or Ohio State, money and the transfer portal are central to success. As you’ll read, the Ferris State Bulldogs know a thing or two about navigating the current landscape.

This D-II program is churning out transfer portal stars — and never missing a beat

During Tuesday night’s superfluous College Football Playoff ranking show on ESPN, Ole Miss learned just how close it sits to its first-ever CFP berth.

The sixth-ranked Rebels are three wins away — maybe only two — from playing meaningful football in December. And a big reason why is a zero-star quarterback from a Division II school that most power conference fans couldn’t find on a map if you spotted them Michigan and a compass.

Trinidad Chambliss has been a revelation this season, the football equivalent of finding a winning Mega Millions ticket in your couch cushions. The once-anonymous Ferris State QB is perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, vaulting Ole Miss into the national championship discussion and turning his former program into a household name, a level of exposure money can’t buy.

How has Ferris State handled its recent publicity and constant mentions on ABC and ESPN? By winning more than ever. That’s right. Ferris State — the defending Division II national champions — lost Chambliss and … got better.

The Bulldogs are 9-0, winning by an average of 39 points, and are the unanimous No. 1 team in D-II. They have shut out three opponents, held another to six points and scored 76, 70, 63 and 59 in four separate games. Their “worst” offensive showing was a 34-17 win over No. 8 Pittsburg State.

Even more remarkable: Chambliss isn’t the only player Ferris State lost to an FBS school. To paraphrase LeBron James, the Bulldogs lost not one, not two, not three — they lost FIVE offensive players and THREE defensive players to FBS schools, one of the most mind-bending stats of the season.
