🏅Will Trump sign an NIL Executive Order?

Nick Saban’s been in the President’s ear...

In partnership with

Hey there,

We’ve got some big updates today from the political, business, and educational sides of the NIL world. First, Donald Trump is reportedly considering an executive order to reign in NIL – all because Nick Saban got to talk to him. Then, we dive into how Texas could be spending up to $40 million on their football roster… and whether that might turn into a problem. Lastly, we’re looking at Iowa’s newest NIL class, which pairs could-be agents up with real student-athletes.

It’s all coming up now. Keep scrolling to catch up on the weekend’s NIL news!

The Big 3

The President is Considering an NIL Executive Order

Donald Trump met with Nick Saban late last week, wherein Saban allegedly complained about NIL’s impact on college sports. That rant seems to have made an impact on the President – reports are now surfacing that he’s considering an executive order to fix NIL in college sports.

If this were to happen, we don’t know what it would look like… but we can make some reasonable guesses. Saban’s been critical of NIL creating an “uneven” playing field in college sports for a long time, so he likely suggested adding some NIL leveling mechanism, like a spending cap.

President Trump has passed more executive orders than any president in American history this early into a term, which gives more credence to the reports. (More)

Texas Is Spending Millions on Their Football Roster

Reports emerged late last week that the Texas Longhorns will be spending around $35-40 million for their football roster next season – well above any other reported figure in the nation. The accounting may work for now, but the situation could be very different later this year.

You see, the Longhorns can go above the $20 million rev-share cap by paying players through their NIL collective. That’s great and all, except that the forthcoming NIL clearinghouse – which is supposed to make sure NIL deals respond to market value – is expected to police deals retroactively.

Translation: There could be penalties coming for teams that operate their NIL collectives as if nothing’s changed. That $35-40 million figure likely includes deals that the clearinghouse would deem pay-for-play. (More)

Iowa’s Simulated NIL Agency Class

NIL courses have been popping up at schools across the country, but the University of Iowa’s newest initiative may be the best one yet. It’s called “NIL: Simulated Agency Experience,” and pairs non-athletes with athletes to score NIL deals.

Here’s how the program works: Non-athlete students get paired up with athletes on a voluntary basis, and then serve as an NIL agent of sorts for them. That way, the students get experience while the athletes get help scoring NIL deals.

“I took this class because I want to become a sports lawyer in the future,” said law student Lauren Keating, “The tides with collegiate sports are moving so fast that new information and changes are happening every single day, so it’s important to learn as much as possible about the processes of NIL before we go out and work in the field.” (More)
